One of the biggest questions couples ask when planning their wedding is....
"What should our wedding day timeline look like?"
And it's a great question. A well thought out timeline doesn't just keep the day running smoothly - it gives you space to breath, enjoy the moments, and soak it all in without feeling rushed. As a wedding photographer, I've seen how a realistic timeline can completely transform the feel of a wedding day.
This guide will walk you through a typical wedding day timeline, with tips to help you tailor it to your day.
Morning Prep
The morning is a wonderful time, I love arriving and soaking up the excitement and anticipation of whats about to become one of the biggest days of your lives! I usually arrive around 2 hours before you aim to get your dress on, this allows time for detail shots, hair and make up pic's, gift exchanges and champagne pops!
TOP TIP: Try to be ready at least 30 minutes before you plan to leave for your ceremony. This buffer is golden for relaxed photos and unexpected delays.
The Details
I love capturing all the little details that you have spent so much time bringing together.
TOP TIP: If you can arrange to have all your details ready in one place I can make sure they are documented beautifully.
Rings, invitation stationary, shoes, jewellery, perfume and any other sentimental items.
Groom Prep
Whilst I spend most of my time with the Bride in the morning I do love to meet up with the Groom and his crew. It doesn't have to be a long time, 15 minutes is usually enough to get buttonholes done, some fun shots and then a quick trip to the bar!
If the groomsmen have something planned in the morning like a cold water dip or something worth capturing I have a second shooter that can come along to capture this.
Getting Dressed & the Reveal's
Putting the dress on is often when the day feels the most real! Its a moment you want to create calm for and one not to be rushed. Whoever is helping you into the dress needs to be ready so we can get some lovley photo's with them at this precious moment. Do you want to add time for a special bridesmaids reveal and of course the father of the bride. These moments can make for wonderful treasured images.
The Ceremony
Whether you're getting married on-site or travelling to your ceremony, always add extra time. Traffic, parking, and last minute nerves can all slow things down, its at this point you want to feel calm and excited.
Ceremonys are the heart of the day lasting between 30 and 60 minutes depending on if you have a registry office / civil ceremony or a church service.
TOP TIP: BRIDE - Walk slowly, take it all in, breath and smile. GROOM - Turn around, take a breath and don't rush your feelings awaym- it's one of the most emotional moments and makes for the most beautiful, genuine reactions.
Confetti & Whole Group
Immediately after the cermony is a great time for the confetti shot - its a traditional and fun way to start your married life and everyone gets to be involved.
TOP TIP: My secret to making this run smoothly is to hide you away whilst we get everyone ready to welcome you.
If you want a whole group photo this is also the best time to grab this shot as well, when everyone is around. It doesn't need to take long to get a shot of all your loved ones.
TOP TIP: Spread the word that you will be getting a whole group shot so that people don't stray away and end up missing it!
Group Photos
This is often the bit couple's think has to be a chore but it really doesn't. If you can come up with a list of the formal group shots you would like we can set aside a short amount of time to get them done. This is time you get to be with those people not just to stand and smile at the camera but to hug, chat and laugh. We can be creative and get some editorial vibes going or we can be candid and get you just being together - either way the group shots dont have to be too staged or take up too much time.
TOP TIP: I usually recommend no more than 10 group shots as a guide.
Couple Photos
Taking time out together on your wedding day is a beautiful way to pause, reconnect and soak it all in. Couple photos are relaxed, unhurried moments that allow you to step away from the bustle and simply be together.
We can set aside around 30 minutes for your wedding couple photos, or split this time into short pockets of 10 to 15 minutes so you are never away from your guests for long. What works best will depend on your venue, the flow of your day and the natural light.
Wedding photography timelines are always flexible. Whether you are celebrating in Devon, Cornwall or Somerset, I will gently guide you and work with the light and surroundings on the day, allowing space for plans to shift if needed.
These photographs are about connection rather than posing, capturing natural, honest moments that reflect how your wedding day truly feels.
Candid Moments
Once the group shots and couple photos are done, it’s the perfect time to let the camera wander and capture your guests in their natural element. Think laughter, chats, clinking glasses, little hugs—those genuine moments that make your Devon, Cornwall, or Somerset wedding feel alive.
Even just 15–20 minutes of free-flowing, relaxed photography before the wedding breakfast can make a huge difference. These candid shots add real-life energy to your wedding story and often end up being some of the funniest, sweetest memories of the day.
TOP TIP: Keep guests entertained! Adding simple games or activities gives you even more natural, joyful photos. Some ideas couples love:
- Giant Jenga
- Cornhole / Bean Bag Toss
- Hammer the Nail
- Lawn Bowls
- Ring Toss
- Croquet / Mini Golf
Not only do these games get people laughing and interacting, they give me plenty of fun moments to capture, making your wedding story feel full and lively.
Speeches
Wedding speeches are often one of the most heartfelt parts of the day, full of laughter, stories and a few happy tears. In terms of timing, speeches usually take around 30 to 45 minutes in total, depending on how many people are speaking and how comfortable they are in front of a crowd.
For your wedding timeline, it helps to allow a little breathing space here. Speeches sometimes run longer than planned, and that is completely normal. Building in flexibility means everyone can relax and enjoy the moment without feeling rushed. From a photography point of view, speeches are best scheduled when guests are seated and settled, often before the wedding breakfast. This allows anyone who might feel nervous to relax and enjoy their wedding breakfast.
First Dance
Your first dance is such a magical moment and the perfect way to kick off the evening celebrations. Typically, it’s scheduled after the wedding breakfast and speeches but before the evening guests fully arrive on the dance floor, so it has a special, intimate feel. Some couples love to have a choreographed dance—if that’s you, let me know! I can make sure to capture every twirl, spin, and special move so you’ll have memories of all the fun and effort you’ve put in.
The Evening
The evening is when the party really kicks off! Whether you have a band or a DJ, giving guests space to warm up on the dance floor makes for the best candid photos.
By planning a relaxed timeline, the evening energy builds naturally, and I can capture everything from the first shy steps to full-on dance floor fun—making sure your Devon, Cornwall, or Somerset wedding story is complete.
TOP TIP: Having props like hates, glow sticks etc can make for really fun photographs once everyone is getting into the music!
Your Venue
You'll no doubt you spend a lot of thought and time into where you want spend your day, I get to work in the most gorgeous places within Devon, Cornwall and Somerset and each one has its own uniqueness. From elegant country houses to relaxed seaside venues, each location has its own character and charm.
