There are some wedding days that stay with you long after the last dance. Katie and Luke’s autumn wedding at The Great Barn in Devon was one of those days. Full of feeling, grounded in nature, and overflowing with love, it was the kind of celebration that reminds you exactly why weddings matter so much.

Katie and Luke knew early on that they wanted a venue that felt connected to the outdoors and had a strong sense of warmth and care behind it. After researching and shortlisting several venues, they viewed just two in person. The Great Barn was the first, and it instantly stole their hearts.

One of the biggest draws was the beautiful church just a short walk away. Being able to walk between the ceremony and reception meant no transport logistics and a much more relaxed flow to the day. Add to that the cosy underfloor heating, especially comforting while planning an October wedding during a February venue visit, and the stunning gardens glowing with autumn colour, and it felt like the perfect fit.

They also loved knowing that Emma and John, the owners of The Great Barn, are so hands on. That level of care and involvement brings a real sense of calm to a wedding day, and it shows in how smoothly everything runs.

A Nature Inspired Autumn Wedding

Inspired by their love of hiking on Dartmoor and spending time outdoors, Katie and Luke chose a natural, earthy theme for their wedding. Olive green ran through the day, paired with trees as table centres and saplings and wildflowers as wedding favours. Their hope was that their wedding would lead to 60 trees being planted, which feels like such a beautiful legacy of love.

The whole day felt grounded, intentional, and deeply personal. For Luke, the food was the most important detail. For Katie, it was the music and band. Together, they created a celebration that reflected both of them perfectly.

The Most Emotional Moments

When asked about their favourite moment of the day, Katie and Luke found it hard to choose. The entire day exceeded their expectations, but two moments stood out.

Seeing each other at the end of the aisle was incredibly special. That first look, filled with emotion and anticipation, is something no one ever forgets. Just as meaningful was the first quiet moment they shared alone after the ceremony, finally married, letting it all sink in together.

A Relaxed Photography Experience

Katie and Luke wanted photography that felt natural and unforced, while still making sure they had beautiful portraits together. We started with an engagement shoot, which helped them feel comfortable in front of the camera and meant that by the wedding day, everything felt easy and familiar.

They loved that the day was captured quietly, with real moments alongside gentle guidance when needed. Some of their favourite images are ones they didn’t even realise were being taken, captured from different angles without interrupting the flow of the day.

That’s always my aim. To blend into the background, let moments happen, and document the story honestly.

A Wedding Weekend, Not Just a Day

One thing Katie and Luke are especially glad they did was host a more casual gathering the night before the wedding. Having that extra time meant they didn’t feel rushed on the wedding day and could really enjoy being together and spending time with everyone they love.

With cottages available on site at The Great Barn, it’s the perfect venue for a full wedding weekend. It creates space to slow down, connect, and truly savour the experience.

A First Dance to Remember

Their first dance was nothing short of magical. Luke had gifted Katie ballroom dance lessons a few years earlier, and dancing together became something they loved doing as a couple. A few months before the wedding, they decided to choreograph a full routine instead of simply swaying on the dance floor.

They spent around 15 hours learning the dance over several months, fitting it in around injuries and busy lives. There were nerves, especially after a last minute lift nearly went wrong the night before, but on the day it all came together beautifully.

They hadn’t told anyone about the dance, so surprising their guests made it even more special. Once they started dancing, the nerves melted away, and it became one of the most joyful, memorable moments of the day.
